History of Figaro

Past- In the early 1920’s, Figaro was first a bakery named Nebbia, “fog” in Italian. One of the original tenants on the 400 block of Columbus, its owners added artistic touches which remain today. In fact, the frescoed ceiling and wall murals commissioned by the owners of Nebbia in 1927, can still be admired at Figaro. The ceiling, considered the most beautiful in all of North Beach, depicts Botticelli-like angels with loaves of bread and intricate chocolate cakes. Continuing with the baking theme, the lone side mural that remains shows a baby angel baking bread out of a pizza oven

Present - Established in 1995 by Luigi Domincini from Rome, Figaro continues a long history as a site of culinary excellence. Figaro Ristorante Italiano, also known as the house of gnocchi, was named Figaro after the Italian opera- Le Nozze di Figaro (the marriage of Figaro), adopted by Lorenzo da Ponte from the well-known comedy of Beaumarchais (Paris, 1784). LeNozze di Figaro is a biting satire on the privileges of nobility.

Today- Figaro prepares authentic Italian dishes from the regions of Tuscany, Puglia and Lazio, and offers these fresh pasta dishes, tender meats and fresh seafood with consistently outstanding service. Famous for its gnocchi, executive chef Gaspari makes these small potato dumplings fresh every day. Paired with pesto, truffle, pumpkin, mixed mushroom and other sauces, these soft, pillowy potato creations literally melt in your mouth.

Future- Come in and experience the food, history, art and delightful atmosphere of Figaro for yourself!
